Design Trends for 2024

Spending so much time at home in the last few years, we have come to value our homes more deeply as a refuge and self-expression. Here are a few trends on the rise that reflect this growing awareness, along with projects we partnered on that represent these trends.

Biophilic Design

Biophilic is the fancy word for nature-inspired – a touch of outdoors in an indoor space. This is a wide category, encompassing (obviously) the inclusion of plants, but also natural materials like wood and stone and an increase in natural light. It has even meant a rise in natural tones like beiges, browns and greens.

Fern Bar on Broadway Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri features abundant natural light, verdant flora and this white marble we fabricated and installed to create its trendy atmosphere.

Maximalism + Individualism

While minimalism will always appeal to some, popular favor is trending away from blank walls and neutral tones. People’s spaces have become an important method of self-expression. That means more color, texture and personality than ever.

Between the cobalt veins and gold flakes in Cambria’s Portrush quartz, our countertops and waterfall add to the luxury of this lively Lee’s Summit, Missouri kitchen with teal velvet chairs, geometric textured backsplash and vibrant accessories.

Spa Bathrooms

Along with expressing ourselves, we are placing more value on pampering ourselves. Enter spa bathrooms. The ability to relax and retreat without booking a spa venue has won people over, making this luxurious bathroom style a popular addition.

This getaway spa bathroom we partnered on in Kingsville, Missouri, features a spacious shower and floating his-and-hers vanities along with this cozy bathtub alcove.

Integrated Technology

Whether you are working from home or back in the office, staying connected is more important than ever. Every day we find new ways of seamlessly integrating technology into our spaces, making 21st century living more efficient without sacrificing sleek, timeless beauty.

This custom kitchen keeps power at the ready without plastic outlet covers disrupting the sleek look or functionality of the countertops, thanks to the outlets we set directly in the splash.

New Uses for Natural Stone

Design trends can be much like fashion, with styles coming and going in a cycle. Natural stone is very much back as an on-trend option, but that doesn’t mean it is being used in exactly the same way it was twenty years ago.

Kitchens are inviting natural stone back in with reinvention, applying not just to countertops but dramatic elements like marble-clad stove hoods.

This Villas of Leawood, Kansas home features exclusively natural stone, which we fabricated, including its enormous Brazilian Calacatta marble island and matching hood surround.

Porcelain Accessories

Innovation never stops – and that includes using timeless materials like porcelain in entirely new ways. Instead of simple subway tile backsplashes and bathrooms, we’re seeing porcelain in large sheets being applied to entire showers, fireplaces and even one-of-a-kind pieces like coffee tables.

Large-format tiles of Calacatta Aries porcelain from Daltile’s Panoramic nestle together to create this unique coffee table, a custom design challenge we loved tackling.
